This set of four oiled wood spoons highlights her expertise in the former; each one is carefully carved from greenwood with just an axe and carving knife, highlighting the precision and attention to detail that this maker applies during every step of the process.

German-born Rabea Gebler mastered the art of Japanese woodturning and Urushi lacquering in Japan’s Ishikawa Prefecture. She developed a knack for the lost art of Wagatabon – a carving technique originated by roof-shingle craftspeople in Wagatani – which involves creating characterful ridges in chestnut slabs throughout the wooden grain.
