This gilt bronze brooch was conceived circa 1945 by Line Vautrin, a prodigy in the field of costume jewellery. Having mastered the fundamental techniques of artistic jewellery design at the wide-eyed age of 14, Vautrin rose to prominence after pounding Parisian pavements as a door-to-door saleswoman and fine-tuning her craft with a stint at Elsa Schiaparelli’s studio. Vautrin’s pieces take inspiration from ancient symbols and treasures, along with the avant-garde – a combination that makes them eternally collectible. In this instance, the asymmetric texture of the gilting and the vertebrae-like protrusions are destined to capture the imagination of even the most casual admirer.

Mahnaz Ispahani Bartos, a greatly admired New York curator and collector, discovered her love of jewellery as a child through gifts from her Pakistani mother and Iranian grandmother, including Persian turquoise earrings and rings, Meenakari bangles and an Omega watch designed by Andrew Grima. Witness to two revolutions, she set aside this young love for 25+ years of scholarship on matters of global wars and peace. In 2013, however, she returned to her passion, jewellery, turning it into a profession with the launch of Mahnaz Collection, a gallery celebrating global beauty. Her eclectic curation spans renowned and lesser-known names from various eras, all united by exceptional originality, artistry and craftsmanship.
