Urushi Wood and Metal Bowl

This Urushi bowl is crafted from a Japanese Nara oak that was felled near Ido Ferber's studio. This exceptional piece was turned on a wood lathe while still green, then left to develop cracks before being mended with traditional Kasugai nails and various Urushi finishing techniques to achieve a love-worn, aged look.

Israeli-born potter and woodworker, Ido Ferber relies heavily on nostalgia to inform his work; the frivolity of his childhood spent roaming in the countryside. The forms and geometrics of his everyday home objects are also inspired by the artist’s natural surroundings, focusing heavily on imperfections and experimental processes. Ideating and creating out of his Tokyo workshop, each creation combines techniques from many different crafting fields, whether wood-forming or metalwork.
