Since 1978, Hector Saxe has been reinventing traditional games. Here, we see a classic chess set receive the signature treatment. It’s handcrafted in France from alligator-embossed leather, with a leather interior inlay accessible via the removable board. Underneath, you’ll find storage space and 32 pieces made from boxwood and rosewood with a natural or lacquered finish.

Self-taught Michel and Patricia Saxe kick-started Hector Saxe in 1978 with a simple vision: to reframe traditional games as a key part of home design. To do so, they found the finest materials – think precious wood and Italian leather – while staying alert to current trends. From their workshop in Bastille, they craft every piece by hand, making expert, innovative craftsmanship feel like child’s play. And while their story began with backgammon, they’ve since expanded to cover all other elements of games night, from a light-hearted shut the box match to a high-stakes poker tournament.
