It all started wit...

It all started with a trinket tray for close friends India Holmes and Suzie Dowty, who joined forces in 2020 to launch Scarlett and Sallis. To create their mood-boosting pieces, they start by cutting and moulding the wooden base to the desired shape before applying the first layer of thick, natural lacquer. Using a traditional method, they then add a thin layer of clay, which is a mixture of delta river soil and mud. Next, the top layers of lacquer paint are applied and sanded down approximately 20 times for a seamless, high-gloss finish – one that’s only heightened by the last step of one final polish.
