Yunomi Urushi Cypress Wood Cup

This hand-carved Yunomi cup by Ido Ferber, a skilled Israeli-born potter and woodworker based in Tokyo, is crafted from a house beam recovered from a local Sento. The exterior is carved using traditional Japanese hand tools, while the interior is hollowed out using a lathe for a perfectly smooth finish. This Hinoki cypress cup is finished with several layers of Fuki urushi, a traditional Japanese lacquer technique that adds durability and a beautiful sheen.

Israeli-born potter and woodworker, Ido Ferber relies heavily on nostalgia to inform his work; the frivolity of his childhood spent roaming in the countryside. The forms and geometrics of his everyday home objects are also inspired by the artist’s natural surroundings, focusing heavily on imperfections and experimental processes. Ideating and creating out of his Tokyo workshop, each creation combines techniques from many different crafting fields, whether wood-forming or metalwork.
