Doug Fitch and Hannah McAndrew have dedicated themselves to reviving a prehistoric form of pottery decoration—slipware—for modern-day collectors. The couple maintains a workshop in a rural spot in the Scottish county of Dumfries and Galloway, where they manipulate red earthenware clay, throwing each piece by hand to create rustic tableware. The true magic arrives at the decorating, where they draw on the simple, often pastoral, designs of English medieval and folk ceramic as their eternal muse. Doug and Hannah each work spontaneously; once inspiration takes hold, they apply liquid clay slips to the semi-hardened pottery, employing methods such as trailing, sgraffito, and appliqué. This laissez-faire approach results in a piece that, even when reproduced in a set, can never quite be imitated.
