Qäsa Qäsa Carvers

Hand-Carved Blackwood Serving Utensils (Set of 5)

$134

Functional design and Tanzanian influences are at the heart of Qäsa Qäsa Carvers, both of which come to the fore with these serving scoops. Each one is crafted from locally sourced African blackwood and highlights the wood-carving skills established by the Makonde tribe, where a free-hand technique produces naturally smooth results. They all have their uses – you can use the Jikoni spoon for dried foods, the Zanzibar for preserves, the pantry scoop for flour and grains, and the handled spoon for serving. As for the largest, that’s inspired by the Japanese ‘shamoji’ and is a wonderful tool for rice.

Meet the Maker:

Qäsa Qäsa Carvers

Moved by the wonderful taste and culture of Tanzania, Qäsa Qäsa Carvers responsibly source Mninga and African Blackwood to create their collection of kitchen and home utensils. Every piece is hand-carved from a single piece of wood using hammers, chisels and rasps, before being sanded and smoothed in a way that celebrates the wood’s natural grain. Preserving traditions and cultural heritage, the maker financially supports, champions and fosters the skills of talented artisans in the Makonde tribe, who apply time-honoured, wood-carving skills to each and every characterful piece.
