Ido Ferber Yunomi Urushi Cypress Wood Cup

This hand-carved Yunomi cup by Ido Ferber, a skilled Israeli-born potter and woodworker based in Tokyo, is crafted from a house beam recovered from a local Sento. The exterior is carved using traditional Japanese hand tools, while the interior is hollowed out using a lathe for a perfectly smooth finish. This Hinoki cypress cup is finished with several layers of Fuki urushi, a traditional Japanese lacquer technique that adds durability and a beautiful sheen.

Ideating and creating out of his Tokyo workshop, each creation combines techniques from many different crafting fields, whether wood-forming or metalwork.
