For Lebanese maker Shaha Raphael, heritage and craft are indistinguishable. Growing up in coastal Beirut, the artisanship of civilizations past, the region’s craft traditions handed down through generations, and the archaeology of the natural world became core inspirations. Shaha’s first solo show was titled Low Tide, with designs evoking marine treasures she’d collected along the Levantine Mediterranean coast. The ocean’s bounty continues to fascinate her, its influence evident in pieces such as her Fishbone series of hand-cast brass candelabras.
