When best friends Josh and Tom founded Katto in 2018, Josh was emerging from a period of mental health struggles, during which he had taken up cooking, discovering it to be both medicine and meditation. Wanting to give back to the culinary arts and create the artisanal Japanese steel knives and utensils he’d longed for but hadn’t had the resources to acquire, Josh decided to produce handcrafted chef’s tools and ensure they were accessible to professionals and amateurs alike. Fast-forward to today, and elegant knives, chopping boards, and other vital kitchen accessories are hand-forged by a master craftsman and team of six in a workshop in Sheffield, U.K.—in turn writing a new chapter for a region that was once home to many of the world’s best knife makers.
