Named after Apt, a small town in Provence, France, the art form is inspired by the region's colored soils, which potters evoked through mixed and marbleized faïence in pretty palettes. The style—terre mêlée—simulates the natural marbling of stone by kneading different colors of clay together and pressing them into enchanting forms.
