Named for the tiny village in the heart of France, Accolay pottery has a rich legacy. It’s here, as the 20th century entered its second half, that a group of ceramicists settled and began to create striking pieces of earthenware that soon drew legions of fans from all over the country and beyond. Although each brought a distinct aesthetic and skills, their collective work is defined by sculptural silhouettes, functionality—essential to customers in this chapter in time—an organic, almost unfinished earthiness, and vibrant colors. This 1950s vase demonstrates the richness that lies at the heart of many Accolay pieces, thanks to its deep chocolate hue that bleeds into shadowy turquoise.
