German-born Rabea Gebler currently lives in Tokyo where she’s studying Japanese woodturning and urushi lacquering. To get a taste for her mastery in the latter, take a closer look at this Wave plate – perfect for sushi or desserts. It’s been carved into shape using a combination of chisels and hand planes, before a technique called fuki-urushi takes place. This involves applying approximately eight thin layers of natural lacquer and wiping them off, letting each layer cure for two to three days in a controlled humid environment.
