Shinichi and Yasue, the self-taught artists behind Iida Woodturning, work exclusively with a lathe to celebrate the natural colour and grain of wood. In the case of this bowl, yerba matebasi is the species in spotlight. It’s dyed via ash mordanting, which sees the tannin in the wood react with the alkali in the ash to create a reddish hue that, over time, will turn brown. Due to natural imperfections in the wood, this piece is only suitable for decorative use.
