As we head towards summer and life on the open waves, we sit down with the renowned super-yacht designer, Andrew Winch, to discover his creative process, surprising client requests and the non-negotiables when it comes to incorporating life’s luxuries at sea.
From the age of four, I spent most of my holidays at Step Aside, where I learnt to sail and discovered the true sense of escape that being out on the water can bring. My mother, Anna, encouraged a love of drawing and art, while my father, David, instilled in me a deep appreciation of the sea. I later enrolled at Saint Martin’s College of Art, beginning with a foundation course. Although initially drawn to sculpture for my degree, my father—an engineer and businessman—encouraged me to pursue 3D design instead. Midway through my first year, I realized I wanted to design yachts. My tutor agreed to support this path, provided I could find a mentor. That’s when I met Jon Bannenberg, a renowned naval architect designing yachts at the time, who would go on to become my greatest mentor.
At Winch Design, we do not have a house style per se. We focus on clean lines, high-quality materials, and the seamless integration of form and function. Our mission is to enable our clients’ dreams and adventures, and they are all adventurers in their own way; we are giving shape to a wish that is personal to them, whether it’s a yacht design, a private jet or an architecture project. The studios are relentlessly creative, and we are always dedicated to finding solutions to unprecedented challenges.
Attention to detail is non-negotiable. Every surface, material and fixture must not only withstand life at sea but also maintain its pristine appearance over time. Acknowledging the flow of the space is also highly important when designing interiors; whether it’s the way the natural light enters a cabin or how the furniture is arranged to offer both a private and social space for the client, everything must be considered.
Custom–built furniture. To maximize space efficiency and provide a truly bespoke yacht, we work with many talented craftsmen to create beautiful, multifunctional pieces that are both elegant and versatile. In addition to bespoke furniture, we thoughtfully curate lighting, soft furnishings and decorative accessories to complement each space and reflect the client’s unique style.

Bringing our clients' dreams to life is a truly beautiful process. Each project is unique, making every creative journey different and continuously inspiring. Watching a yacht emerge from the shed, knowing it once existed only as a sketch on paper, is an incredibly rewarding experience.
Among the many inspirational figures who have shaped my career, Jon Bannenberg stands out as the most influential. I first approached Jon while studying at Kingston and it marked the beginning of a pivotal mentorship. After spending a winter sailing in the Caribbean, I joined his studio where I worked for six years. During this time, I absorbed invaluable lessons about the industry and witnessed Jon’s bold, risk-taking approach firsthand. This ethos deeply inspired me and became a guiding principle as I went on to establish Winch Design.
We once had a client who wanted a bespoke staircase into the sea for their dog so they could get in and out of the water easily. We designed a unique staircase for the Phoenix I that has now been featured on a number of yachts.

The shift toward eco-friendly materials has been brilliant to see. Our interiors library features a wide range of innovative, sustainable products, from carpets crafted from recycled fishing nets to beLeaf—an eco-conscious alternative to leather that’s perfect for furniture, paneling and decorative accents.
Beyond aesthetic appeal, art must be durable enough to withstand the challenges of the marine environment. This includes selecting materials that can endure temperature fluctuations and humidity—for example, frames often feature UV-resistant varnishes to prevent fading from sunlight exposure. Additionally, securing the art is crucial to ensure it remains intact during the yacht’s movement. Hanging systems such as anti-sway brackets and safety cables are employed to keep pieces firmly in place, even in rough seas, protecting both the artwork and the space.
Some clients opt for games that double as artwork, such as exquisitely handcrafted backgammon sets that blend beautiful design with entertainment. Additionally, advancements in VR technology offer immersive gaming experiences and even fitness options, adding a modern touch to onboard leisure. Of course, no yacht is complete without an array of premium water toys—jet skis and Seabobs remain among the most sought-after for thrill-seeking guests.
The style of glassware and flatware on board is always tailored to the client and the specific yacht. We love to incorporate contemporary, playful pieces whenever possible.
The use of marble trays and leather woven baskets can be a perfect way to store the essentials. Storage options in suede or leather can maintain a cohesive, high-end look throughout the yacht.
Keeping a yacht interior tidy requires a combination of smart organization, regular maintenance and high-end finishes that are easy to maintain. Thoughtfully designed built-in storage with hidden compartments helps keep clutter out of sight, allowing the crew to discreetly store items that guests prefer not to be on display. The use of high-end, durable materials not only enhances the yacht’s aesthetic but also minimizes wear from spills and scratches, preserving a pristine look over time.
Ensuring a memorable stay on board revolves around attention to detail and creating an atmosphere that feels both personalized and relaxed. In our studio, we’re exploring the idea of a custom scent designed to envelop visitors the moment they step in. The right fragrance not only enhances the atmosphere but also evokes a sense of relaxation and sophistication, adding a unique touch to the space.
We always gift our clients one of our Assouline books to keep onboard—a beautifully curated volume that celebrates the legacy of Winch Design and showcases a portfolio of our most iconic projects. More recently, we’ve begun gifting bespoke nautical charts featuring our clients’ favorite destinations from around the world. These handcrafted, three-dimensional works of art are intricately layered to reveal depth, contours and the unique character of each location.
