For curator Cosima Swayze, the passion for home design started young. First with her dollhouse in her childhood home in Gstaad, where she’d spend hours “making little plates and food”, and later in the art room at boarding school in England where she’d be constantly drawing her dream house.
“If I think about it, I was more obsessed with the little items than the design of the home itself; the tissue boxes, serving trays, toothbrushes, mugs…,” she laughs over Zoom from Los Angeles, where she’s called home for most of her adult life. “For as long as I can remember, I've always loved beautiful design—especially the tabletop.”
The tabletop is what most people know and love Swayze for. Her instinct for curating tablescapes in a way that feels whimsical while also elevated using one-of-a-kind pieces from master makers has made her one of the most sought-after tastemakers in her field, with clients including The Beverly Hills Hotel, The Maybourne Beverly Hills, and The Little Nell in Aspen.
Her latest endeavor puts her own creations in the spotlight. The launch of Cosima is both a lifetime in the making and passion project that sees Swayze work with design maisons to create objects that bring together time-honed skill and her own intuition.
“The best thing is bringing two creatives together to create an item that not one of them could have created alone,” she says. “I pinch myself that I’m getting to go into their worlds.”
Her design and hosting ethos steers away from structure: “Growing up in Europe, I was used to a stricter way of hosting, whereas LA is completely different, and I think it's almost undone me slightly. It's super laissez-faire. There's that Cali attitude, which I love.”
Here, as her first home collection launches on ABASK, she conjured the LA sunshine to show us how it’s done.

Breakfast
“Starting your day right sets the tone for everything. There's nothing more lovely than
inviting friends to enjoy breakfast at home—particularly if you've got pain au chocolat,
an abundant bowl of berries, and scrambled eggs.
For this, I used a vibrant Bitossi Ceramiche vase, my Wave glasses holding some bright
sunflowers, a Pigment France rattan tray, and this Augarten croissant dish. I love having conversation starters around the table; if you're inviting people over for the first time and you don't know what to talk about, at least you can talk about the table. Finally, this weighty Alain Saint-Joanis serving spoon, which really is another level of craft. It feels so inviting, almost like a Nancy Myers movie.
I wanted to play into the fact that we’re in Beverly Hills but looking at things from a
European point of view. I have such an appreciation for craft from Italy, Spain, and
France, and I love curating a world of items from all over. The last thing I want is
everything matchy-matchy from one brand. I love the organic flow when each piece has a different story. No table setting should be a copy and paste of another.”

Cosima's Gazpacho Recipe (serves 6):
4 red peppers
1 tomato
1 cucumber
1 shallot
3 garlic cloves
2 tsbp cherry vinegar
Olive oil
Salt
Basil
Place 4 red peppers (with the seeds, stalk & center cut out), 1 shallot, 1 tomato, 1 sliced cucumber, 3 garlic cloves, 2 tbsp of cherry vinegar, and a good pour of olive oil into your blender. Start by gently blending the ingredients together until they are fully blended. Continue to blend on high level until the consistency is smooth.
Pour into bowls. Drizzle some olive oil and salt over the top and place some basil to finish. Enjoy fresh from the blender or keep cold in the fridge until ready to serve.

Lunch
“Spending time creating a beautiful home but not putting effort into your table settings is a real shame. You should put all of yourself into everything you do, but particularly the tabletop; it’s where you host and share such special time. Time is the most important thing.
For lunch here, everything is organic and unfolds as the meal goes on. Glasses and plates will get moved, bowls will become empty, or something else will get served. Summer is geared more towards sharing, and in LA, people can be nightmares with their diets, so I just say, here it is, serve what you want. It’s like a story unfolding on your table that only grows with time. I like things that aren't too structured or made only for special occasions.
We did a beautiful green look as we’re in the hills overlooking Los Angeles, and I added
pink flowers because green and pink feel traditionally ‘Beverly Hills’.
I used my Wave placemats with this beautiful Alain Saint-Joanis cutlery that has a green horn effect. The napkin rings from Pigment France are one of my favorites; they’re the best at what they do, and their colors are extraordinary. The green ties in perfectly with these Laboratorio Paravicini plates, which are so fun because all the plates have different monkeys on. From afar, everything looks very cohesive, but as you get closer, you realize the differences. To me, it's a perfect mix.”

Cosima's Kale Salad Recipe (serves 6):
1 large bag of chopped kale
1 small pot of pomegranate seeds
6 chicken breasts, sliced, seasoned with paprika, cayenne pepper, aromat, lemon juice, salt, and olive oil
2 avocados
1/2 cucumber
2 lemons
Olive oil
Salt and pepper
Start by preparing the marinade for your chicken breasts. In a large bowl mix your olive oil, the juice of 1 lemon, ½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper (or 1 if you like it spicy), 1 teaspoon of paprika, and a good pinch of salt. Before placing your chicken breasts in the bowl, make sure they have been flattened with a mallet. Place in a bowl and mix with the ingredients. Let it sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to marinate.
In a large mixing bowl, place your washed chopped kale and squeeze the juice of 2 lemons all over, as well as a good pour of olive oil. Mix well and add salt and pepper. Cut up 2 avocados and slice ½ a cucumber, add into the bowl and mix.
Once the chicken has marinated, place a large pan on low/medium heat with some olive oil and cook the chicken for roughly 6 minutes on each side (or until fully cooked). Let the chicken cool before slicing into strips and adding to your salad. Mix everything together and serve fresh.

Aperitivo
“Celebrating the little moments every day is so important because it's such a gift to be here. If you can give your friends a great time and share the love by making things look beautiful and taste amazing, then that time is well spent. It's creating memories around the table.
I love to create a little tete-a-tete with my husband after a long day's work where catch up with a great drink in a beautiful glass. One of my favorites is Pimm's in my Wave glass; it’s so fun because you can see the fruits and colors coming through.
Another is a Kir Royale à la piscine—champagne and crème de cassis with a huge bowl of ice. There's something lovely about having something slightly formal in such an informal way. Having champagne in a tumbler rather than a coupe relaxes the mood a little bit.”
Dinner
“The evenings roll on here because it's so warm. In LA, it's almost summer year-round— you pinch yourself and feel like you're in holiday mode. That kind of bleeds into people's attitudes; you start the evening with drinks to watch the sunset, then dinner rolls into dancing and games, then before you know it you're in the early hours of the morning.
To me, color leads the way on the table. I love black and think it’s sexy for the evening, if it isn't too harsh. Here, it pops with my amber Wave glasses and the brass candle
holders. I always try and use things that I think no-one may have seen before.
I’m obsessed with these Pinto plates and have taken references from the ivy outside.
There's some red on the chairs too, and this Lobmeyr vase features hand-painted red
flowers. They all tie in together; it’s consciously unconscious.
Mixing materials is a great way to create a unique table setting. You should never fear
doing so; the more the merrier, as long as they're within the same kind of palette. To me, it’s being able to create multiple looks with few items. There’s no strict rule book.”

Cosima's LA-Way Banoffee Pie Recipe (serves 6):
1 can of condensed milk
1 pack of Biscoff
1 pack of salted butter
1 tsp vanilla extract
3oz coconut sugar
Heavy whipping cream
2 bananas
To make the base, place 1 pack of Biscoff biscuits in a plastic zip lock bag and with a mallet smash until they are small crumbs with no large lumps.
Heat 3oz of butter in a pan on low heat. Once melted, take off the heat and add in your Biscoff crumbs. Mix well and place in your tin/baking dish. Cover the base of the dish and leave in the fridge to cool while you prepare the rest of the recipe.
Melt 3oz of butter in a pan and add 3oz of coconut sugar on a low heat. Add in your tin of condensed milk and bring to a boil while continuing to stir. Add the vanilla extract. Continue to stir until the consistency is thick. Pour over the base of Biscoff and put back in the fridge to chill for a few hours or overnight.
Cut 2 bananas in small-ish slices and place on top of the toffee layer in a circle covering the base. For more flavor, add 2 layers.
Pour your small box of heavy whipping cream into a mixing bowl and with a hand-held mixer whisk it until thick and fluffy. With a spoon, gently place the whipped cream on top of the pie (do not spread even yet or you will remove the bananas). Once a thick layer is on the pie, use a spatula to gently spread evenly. Shave your dark chocolate on top and serve immediately or re-fridge for a few hours. Best served after sitting out for 1 hour to ensure the toffee layer isn’t too hard.
