You may know food, interiors, and travel photographer Joann Pai by her Instagram name, A Slice of Pai, a favorite online corner for squares that capture the beauty of quiet moments to savor. It wasn’t always the way.
Thirteen years ago, Pai was working for immigration and the government of Canada having completed her studies in criminology. The kitchen was always her personal escape, somewhere to switch off and experience a slow-down. When she started to document her work, it wasn’t long before she started to get noticed. “That's when I realized I was more into the photography part than the cooking part,” she says.
After a chance commission through her Instagram page, she started picking up small jobs that led to her resigning from her role and realizing her dream of moving to Paris to immerse herself in “the beauty and the history of food and gastronomy”.
“What I love about food the most is that it’s a gateway to learn about a different culture, to have conversations and slow down.”
In the meantime, her work has become celebrated for its warmth as well as intrigue. “My style has definitely evolved and that's one of my favorite parts about this job—you're always learning new things. I always want someone to have a sense of place, so wherever I am, I want to transport you there and have you sit at the table with me.”
Or, in this case, a picnic with her in Paris. Here, she creates a summer mise en scène for ABASK.
The Art of the Paris Picnic
“In Paris, you picnic anywhere, anytime. As soon as the sun comes out, Parisians flock outside, they grab a baguette, they grab some butter, a bottle of wine or beer, and they sit outside and enjoy. I love to keep it simple. I usually have some crudité with dips, like aioli or hummus, and a lot of bread, butter and cheese.”

Santé!
“I like to make cocktails during a picnic. I find these Martini glasses fun; I love the colors and the shape, and they stand out as this element of surprise. Instead of using them for cocktail this time, we used them for dessert which we put strawberries in and whipped cream, so I thought that added a fun pop.”
The Chicest of Set-ups
“Bringing objects like a tray and proper glasses to a picnic are quiet luxuries. It’s nice to deviate from the normal because those are the moments that you remember. I love serving a good rosé, because to me, it says summer in Provence. Bringing along card games like tarot cards brings out fun and interesting conversation too. In Paris, you could also bring along a game of pétanque.”

The Details
“Objects like a beautiful tablecloth that's also a picnic rug like this may result in more washing, but it elevates the experience. It doesn't feel disposable; it makes you feel more present, and I think it makes you appreciate the moment more. It really adds to the atmosphere—what you’re eating and the feeling overall. Plus, this one was so comfortable to sit on and the color of it made everything else stand out even more.”
The Parisian Secret
“To picnic like a Parisian, just take a couple of good products that you really love. A picnic is about sharing, so things must be easy to share. There's no right or wrong answer, but we like to go local. Bringing beautiful cutlery to a picnic makes you appreciate the experience more, too.”
